How Will Google's AI-Based Agricultural Information Tool Impact Farming in India?
Google has unveiled a new AI-based tool called Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU), which utilizes high-resolution satellite imagery and machine learning to provide detailed information on individual farms. The tool aims to offer valuable insights such as field boundaries, drought readiness, irrigation, and market access, ultimately assisting farmers in making data-driven decisions to improve crop yields.
By offering granular-level information crucial for the Indian agricultural landscape, ALU is set to empower farmers with valuable insights. Developed on Google Cloud in collaboration with the Anthro Krishi team and India's digital AgriStack, the tool will also provide detailed data on crop type, field size, water availability, and access to infrastructure.
Moreover, Google's introduction of Project Vaani in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and tools such as IndicGenBench and Composition of Language Models (CALM) demonstrate the company's commitment to promoting information accessibility in Indian languages. This initiative includes data from 80,000 speakers across 58 languages in 80 districts and aims to assess the language generation capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) for 29 Indian languages.
