Is Your Vacation - Matters To Everyone?

In reality, vacation does not look nearly as different as it should from regular work. We count as a vacation when we do not prioritize work over other activities when we create hours for ourselves, or when we only check email a couple of times a day. Sometimes, those compromises are all we can manage.

Other times, it’s by choice that these compromises are the ‘best possible’ vacation. We feel compelled to stay connected— all the people your time away matters to: your loved ones, your colleagues, and you.

Your vacation is important to your loved ones

It makes sense. Whether you have kids, spouses, parents, friends hard-earned, or pets, someone likely wants to spend time with you. Think about who you haven’t been able to make time for, or to meaningfully connect with. Those are the people your vacation likely matters to most. No excuse is required.

Taking a vacation is also important to your colleagues, and your organization

The benefits to your organization at large are important as well. ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ remains a timeless truth. Think of all the guidance, direction, and problem-solving you provide every day. In your absence, others may come up with innovations that take permanent hold. Imagine coming back from vacation to find improvements or learnings that you too can now benefit from!

And lastly, the trust you show your team to manage in your absence sets the tone for how they take a vacation and cover for each other. Who doesn’t want to be part of a team that plays as hard as it works?

And most of all, a vacation should be important to you

For many, vacation is like creating something like time for personal writing, not responding to email. Articles, blogs, and travel diaries give me a chance to reflect on new experiences and shifts in my perspective. This time for my perspective. This time your passion/interest refreshes your mind. It improves focus and mental health and gives a lingering sense of balance when work becomes consuming again.

A great vacation doesn’t always come easy.
