Meta's New Move: AI-Generated Image Labels Hit Facebook, Instagram, and Threads
Did you hear the news about Meta introducing labels for AI-generated images on social media? If not, let me fill you in.
Meta, which owns Instagram, Facebook, and Thread has revealed that it will now start labelling AI-generated images across all of its social media networks in the upcoming months. AI will be labelled making it easier to differentiate between images created by humans.

The AI-generated image label has already been applied to images generated using Meta AI's feature, but the company is now expanding this to include AI images generated by other industry leaders like Google and OpenAI.
Meta is working with other leading companies in the industry to develop common standards for identifying AI-generated content. The purpose is to build tools that can identify invisible markers of AI-generated images even from other companies.

However, Meta can only start labelling these images as "AI generated" once other companies like Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock start adding metadata to images created using their AI generator tools.
One thing that is quite interesting is that Meta can't yet detect AI-generated audio and videos from other companies. As a result, the company is instead adding a feature for people to disclose when they are adding AI-generated video or audio on Instagram, Thread or Facebook.
Overall, this is a positive move from Meta as it will help people know when photorealistic content they’re seeing has been created using AI. It's also great to see companies coming together to develop common standards for identifying AI-generated content.
