YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix to Skip Dedicated Apps for Apple Vision Pro: Here's Why

Google's YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix have decided against launching dedicated apps or promoting their existing apps for Apple's upcoming mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro. Instead, they recommend users access their content through a web browser on the device. The Vision Pro, equipped with an Optic ID secure authentication system, analyzes a user's iris for quick unlocking. While Apple's apps for music and podcasts will be available on the device, the absence of the most popular streaming apps like Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube at the launch on February 2 may impact its entertainment focus.

Spotify also has no plans for a new app for visions, and its iPad app won't be enabled for the device. However, Spotify is expected to work through a web browser.

Entertainment App Support

The absence of YouTube is significant as the platform has been preinstalled on Apple devices like the iPad since its launch in 2010. While there are no immediate plans, YouTube hasn't ruled out supporting the Vision Pro in the future.

Despite YouTube and Spotify's decisions, several other entertainment apps, including Disney+, HBO Max, Peacock, ESPN, and Amazon Prime Video, are participating. Apple claims support for over 1 million titles in the

Other App Considerations

The iPhone and iPad apps, including Meta's Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp currently do not appear set to work on the Vision Pro. However, this could change by the device's launch, or developers may plan dedicated versions for VisionOS.

About the price & preorders

The Vision Pro is priced at $3,499, and Apple will begin accepting preorders on Friday. Apple expects the Vision Pro to play a role in healthcare, technician training, education, and potentially corporate applications in the future.

What's the catch?

This decision by YouTube, Spotify, and Netflix to avoid dedicated apps for the Vision Pro may impact its initial entertainment offerings, but the device is still expected to support a vast array of titles through its App Store.
